The Composition Awards

The Australasian Piano Pedagogy Conference 2017
invites full-time secondary and tertiary students to submit a composition for piano solo to be considered for the following awards:

  • Composers may elect to enter one or both categories below
  • Entry fee is $20 per composition
  • Up to ten compositions will be chosen to be performed at the Finale Concert, Friday 14 July 2017
  • Finalists may choose to perform their own composition or nominate a pianist to perform for them
  • 5mbs* will record the concert - with the right to broadcast - and will provide a free CD to each finalist.
    Additional CDs may be purchased for $20 each.

Category 1 – Hal Leonard Composition Award

This Composition for solo piano should be:

  • Suitable for young pianists
  • No more than 2 pages in length
  • Accessible to beginner students but should also capture the imagination of more advanced students or make good sight reading material.
  • Whatever best represents the essence of the composer; the piece can be modal, unusual, rhythmic, fun, lyrical and any style.

Prize: the work is to be published in The Piano Teacher magazine in May 2018, and the prizewinner will receive a prize pack of newly published music titles to the value of $400.

Note: Hal Leonard will grant readers of The Piano Teacher magazine and website permission to reproduce, arrange or transcribe the winning piece only for the period between publishing and the next edition of The Piano Teacher magazine about a 6-month period. After that time copyright reverts to the winner.


Category 2 – Kawai Composition Award

The Composition for solo piano should be:

  • Approximate level grade 5-6
  • A maximum duration 5 minutes

Prize: Kawai ES100 Portable Piano

A hardcopy or pdf of the score AND an mp3 recording must be supplied.
